Chapter 17

The Christmas season had come in with a roar at Jenna’s Essentials. Sales and subscriptions to my skin care products were off the chart. We were shipping orders by the palette. I boosted production, enlarged the shipping department and rented more space in a climate-controlled warehouse.

I returned to a routine of going into my company every day and not feeling rushed to jump in my car and drive back to Lockett. I conducted staff meetings. I made decisions. I again became an on-site part of the nuts and bolts of the operation.

That was what went on in my days, but what went on in my mind at night was downright pornographic. I went to bed every night with sex with Cable on my mind. I cursed him and I cursed myself. Before I had let myself be seduced by him, I hadn’t felt this burning need. I called on BOB more often than I would ever admit aloud.

My ever-present inner voice chimed in. A mechanical toy is better than having a man mucking up your life! You don’t have time for drama!

Right!

Even as we rushed Christmas gift products out the door, my staff and I were deep into the planning for launching the new fragrance line my chemistry team had developed, the Eau Sauvage copycat the marketing department and I had named “Exotique.” It had turned out better than I expected. It would hit the market for Valentine’s Day sales, along with the fragrance “Bethany” that we had never put on the market.

I had decided to present a separate gift box for each fragrance, with emphasis on the new one, along with a bottle of high-quality body lotion with a matching scent. Alicia and I had spent hours with the graphics designer. For the Exotique launch, I wanted packaging that was elegant, but masculine, sexy and memorable. The designer had produced a red foil box with a darker red foil raised lettering. For Bethany, she had created something softer—a light turquoise box with raised old-gold lettering. It had cost more than any packaging I had ever approved. It had to produce sales.

“This will be going into Macy’s for sure for Valentine’s and into Dillard’s, maybe,” Alicia told me. She had rushed to show me the packaging. “The artwork is fantastic. It sends the message we’re trying for. Macy’s is giving us two feet of real estate, with emphasis on Exotique.”

Alicia and I both had been knocking on big department store doors. “Oh my God, that’s huge for us,” I said. “How did you get them to commit?”

“It was the packaging. Their buyer loved it. It’s so amazing.”

“It is,” I agreed. “The designer we worked with on this is the best I’ve ever seen. If Macy’s likes the packaging others will, too. Let’s not lose sight of our goal.”

“I won’t. Placement with four of the big guys by Mother’s Day, right?”

“And let’s not lose this designer’s phone number.” I turned to Amy the Miracle Worker. “Stay on top of this with the production department.
